Say No to New Fees

by Hostetler, Michael

Each time that you use your Financial Center debit or credit card, a merchant is paid immediately and your credit union receives interchange income. This interchange income helps pay the cost of many of your credit union services such as reissuing cards compromised by a merchant data breach and supplying a contact center that is available when your debit or credit card is stolen.

Interchange helps us offer checking accounts, debit cards, and other important products with attractive rates and fees along with quality service.

Your credit union, not a merchant, is responsible for absorbing losses from fraud and unpaid balances associated with card programs. Interchange supports everything from reissuing cards compromised by merchant data breaches, to providing a call center to contact if your card is stolen, to many other essential program functions.

If interchange were reduced and could no longer contribute adequate support for card programs, consumers would end up paying more for their debit cards.
